Book Review: Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics

"What is happening on this prairie?  Is there evil within it, like the place in Henry's story, torturing me from afar until the time comes to claim its prey?  Is my whole family doomed to death after all?
Or is it, all of it...just me...?"

Goodreads Synopsis:

When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner’s family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries.

When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn’t right on the prairie. She’s heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can’t be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul.

I love horror, especially horror books.  If a book's premise seems scary I will definitely want to read it.  I love to be scared! I knew this book had to do with demons or possession and I couldn't wait to read this late at night.  This book was definitely high on the creep factor.  The beginning was a little slow but the story eventually became exciting and seriously creepy.  I liked most of the characters in this book and I really started caring about what happens to this family.  The things that happen to this family are truly horrible and disturbing.  I kept wondering if the horror was all in the main character's head or was this all really happening?  Is Amanda going crazy or is her new home really cursed?

I don't know about you but if I was thinking of moving into a place and found the inside covered in blood, I would definitely not move in.  Run!  Don't stay there!  I knew the ending would probably not be pretty.  Things definitely became horrifying towards the end of the book and the last couple of pages gave me the chills.

I liked this book and it was a perfect book to read around Halloween.  I loved the creepy atmosphere!  This was a fast read and I thought it was a very interesting story.  Some parts freaked me out and some parts made me cringe.  I recommend this book if you love scary, horror stories.  This is a young adult novel but I think it's a good read for older adults as well.  If you really want to scare yourself, read this book at night right before you go to sleep.  You'll have pleasant dreams.
