(Very Late) Wrap Up! What I Read In August 📚📚📚

August was a pretty great reading month for me.  I read a total of 12 books.  I read a lot of advanced reader's copies this month because I needed to catch up on all the ones I received from NetGalley and Edelweiss for review. See below for books I read and my ratings.  I'll be posting full reviews of all of these books soon!  :)

What I Read In August:

The Education of a Coroner: Lessons in Investigating Death
by John Bateson
Publication Date: August 15, 2017
by Scribner
Source: NetGalley ARC
Genre: Non-Fiction
Pages: 368
Available Here: AmazonKindle
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 Stars)

Recommended For:  Readers interested in forensics and the life of a coroner.

My Thoughts:
Very interesting book about the experiences of former Marin County coroner, Ken Holmes.  The reader is given a glimpse into the life of a coroner, featuring Holme's account of several interesting forensic cases throughout his time as coroner.

Surviving Death: Evidence of the Afterlife
by Leslie Kean
Publication Date: March 7, 2017
by Crown
Source: Blogging For Books
Genre: Non-Fiction
Pages: 416
Available Here: AmazonKindle
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐1/2 (3.5/5 Stars)

Recommended For: Readers interested in paranormal studies/experiences.

My Thoughts:
Quite the interesting book with several paranormal case studies, exploring everything from past life memories to near death experiences.  I liked this book but I mostly enjoyed the chapters on past life experiences. Other chapters, such as the ones about disembodied hands, were just strange.

There's Someone Inside Your House
by Stephanie Perkins
Publication Date: September 26, 2017
by Dutton Books for Young Readers
Source: NetGalley ARC
Genre: Young Adult Fiction; Horror
Pages: 304
Available Here: AmazonKindle
My Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5 Stars)

Recommended For: Readers looking for young adult horror fiction that is a little gory, but not that scary.  Readers who enjoyed the movies Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer may enjoy this book.

My Thoughts:
I thought this story was just average.  I never read a Stephanie Perkins book, so I didn't know what to expect, and this is her first horror novel.  I didn't find the story that scary, maybe because I'm a horror junkie and I've read some horrifying stories.  The story reminded me a lot of Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer.  I didn't find any of the characters that interesting and the plot was just average in my opinion.

Odd & True
by Cat Winters
Publication Date: September 12, 2017
by Amulet Books
Source: NetGalley ARC
Genre: Young Adult Fiction; Historical Fiction; Supernatural
Pages: 368
Available Here: AmazonKindle
My Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 (4.5/5 Stars)

Recommended For: Lovers of historical fiction with a touch of the paranormal.

My Thoughts:
I really loved this book.  The plot wasn't what I was expecting but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.  I loved the main characters and I enjoyed the gothic vibe of the story.  You can check out my full review here.

The Creeps (A Deep Dark Fears Collection)
by Fran Krause
Publication Date: September 26, 2017
by Ten Speed Press
Source: NetGalley ARC
Genre: Graphic Novel
Pages: 144
Available Here: AmazonKindle
My Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 Stars)

Recommended For: Anyone curious about the irrational fears of various people told through illustrations.

My Thoughts:
This was definitely an entertaining collection of deep dark fears.  I thought I had a lot of crazy fears until I looked at these stories.  There are some messed up, irrational fears in this book.  I liked this second collection more than the first.  It just was more interesting to me for some reason.

The Devils You Know
by M.C. Atwood
Publication Date: October 3, 2017
by Soho Teen
Source: Edelweiss ARC
Genre: Young Adult Fiction; Horror
Pages: 288
Available Here: AmazonKindle
My Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5 Stars)

Recommended For:  Readers who enjoy young adult fiction that is entertaining but not too scary (unless you have a fear of clowns or reanimated dolls-then you might have nightmares after reading this story!)

My Thoughts:
This was a very strange book.  I didn't find it that scary and all the characters were kind of annoying.  I found myself not really caring what happened to any of them.  The book had some interesting moments but not enough to make me give this a higher rating.  The story was like The Breakfast Club in a haunted house, which sounds cool but the plot was just average.

Bad Girl Gone
by Temple Mathews
Publication Date: August 8, 2017
by A Thomas Dunne Book for St. Martin's Griffin
Source: NetGalley ARC
Genre: Young Adult Fiction; Mystery
Pages: 272
Available Here: AmazonKindle
My Rating:  ⭐⭐1/2 (2.5/5 Stars)

Recommended For:  Readers who enjoy young adult paranormal, mystery books.

My Thoughts:
I didn't enjoy this story that much.  The main character was just annoying and there was some insta-love that just made me want to gag. The mystery was interesting but some of the dialogue between the teenagers was just weird.

The Rattled Bones
by S.M. Parker
Publication Date: August 22, 2017
by Simon Pulse
Source: NetGalley ARC
Genre: Young Adult Fiction; Supernatural; Mystery
Pages: 384
Available Here: AmazonKindle
My Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 (4.5/5 Stars)

Recommended For: Readers who enjoy a good creepy, paranormal mystery.

My Thoughts:
This was a really great story.  The mystery was very intriguing and I didn't want to put this book down.  I definitely recommend checking this one out if you enjoy paranormal stories with a good mystery.

by Starscape
Source: Publisher
Genre: Middle-Grade; Contemporary
Pages: 256
