My Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐1/2  (3.5 out of 5 stars)

Goodreads Synopsis:
The beast raged; it punctured the air with its spite. But the girl was fiercer.
Tea is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy makes her a bone witch, who are feared and ostracized in the kingdom. For theirs is a powerful, elemental magic that can reach beyond the boundaries of the living—and of the human.
Great power comes at a price, forcing Tea to leave her homeland to train under the guidance of an older, wiser bone witch. There, Tea puts all of her energy into becoming an asha, learning to control her elemental magic and those beasts who will submit by no other force. And Tea must be strong—stronger than she even believes possible. Because war is brewing in the eight kingdoms, war that will threaten the sovereignty of her homeland…and threaten the very survival of those she loves.

My Thoughts:

The gorgeous cover of this book is what initially made me want to read it. Such a gorgeous cover! I also found the synopsis very intriguing. Ashas (similar to geishas) who wield magic, and a girl who finds out she's a bone witch and can raise the dead. I had to read this book. It definitely sounded like something I'd enjoy.

The story begins when the main character, Tea, unwittingly raises her brother from the dead. She learns that she's a bone witch and she has the dark power of necromancy. Tea is visited by Lady Michaela, a feared bone witch in the land, and becomes her apprentice, soon training to become an asha.

I love fantasy novels, and this book had a lot of magic and other worldly creatures in it, but I felt like nothing much happened throughout most of the story. Most of the book is Tea's training to become an asha and it got kind of boring after a while. I wanted more excitement, more action. There was a bit too much description of an asha's clothing and fashion accessories that seemed unnecessary.

I really loved one of the author's other books, "The Girl From The Well", and I was hoping to love this story as well, but it was too slow moving for me. I have a feeling I will enjoy the second book in this series much more because, hopefully, there is more action and adventure.  I was definitely hoping for more excitement; however, I found most of the characters to be interesting, and the author is really good at world building, so I would recommend giving this book a try.
